Sample Answers
In addition to the scoring rubric found on page A32, the following sample answers
may be used as guidance in evaluating open-ended assessment items.
1. a. Subtraction is when you subtract
one number from another.
b. Subtraction without regrouping
is when you subtract the ones.
Subtraction with regrouping is when
you subtract and there are not
enough ones to subtract from so
you need to regroup.
c. You subtract money just like you
subtract whole numbers. For
example: $2 - $1 is the same
as 2 - 1.
2. a. The three different methods of
estimation include estimation
using rounding, estimation using
compatible numbers.
b. Rounding is most likely to give you
an estimate that is farthest from the
actual answer because you round
the first number and change the rest
to zeros. For example, if you have
the number 267 and change the
number to 300 for estimating, you
are 33 away from the real number.
c. Sample problem: Melissa makes
$28 a week babysitting. Daniel
makes $36 dollars a week cutting
grass. About how much more
does Daniel make in a week than
Melissa?
Answer: About $10 more.
3. a. It costs $2 more to get a turkey sub
than a fruit salad.
b. It will cost $6 to get an apple, a milk
and a salad.
